Every year, thousands of travelers start their Serengeti research with the same handful of questions. How long? Which month? Is it safe? What will I actually see? So to make life easier, we’ve gathered the most common questions we get asked based on years of hosting guests at TAASA Lodge and at TAASA Migration Camp. Whether you’re deep in planning mode or just beginning to dream about your Serengeti safari, this guide is here to give you all the answers you need.
For a truly immersive Serengeti experience, we recommend a minimum of 3 to 4 full days. This allows enough time for diverse game drives, encountering various wildlife, and truly settling into the rhythm of the bush. Adding an extra day or two, especially if you’re traveling long distances, can make a significant difference to your relaxation and game viewing success. Guests at TAASA Lodge often find that 3-4 nights allow them to fully enjoy both the extensive game drives and the unique private concession activities like night drives.
If you’re combining the Serengeti with other parks such as Ngorongoro Crater or Tarangire National Park, a ten to fourteen day Tanzania itinerary is the ideal length of stay for a first visit.
There is no bad time to visit the Serengeti. There is, however, a best time for what you specifically want to experience.
The dry season, from June through October, is widely considered the peak safari season. The vegetation thins, animals gather around permanent water sources, and wildlife is highly concentrated and easy to spot. This is also the window for the famous Mara River crossings, where hundreds of thousands of wildebeest attempt to cross crocodile-filled waters in one of nature’s most dramatic spectacles. TAASA Migration Camp is positioned in Kogatende during this season specifically for this reason.
The green season, from November through April, is the Serengeti at its most cinematic. The plains flood with color, bird life is extraordinary, and the southern Serengeti hosts the calving season from late January through March. A breathtaking time when up to half a million wildebeest are born in just a few weeks. Predators are well-fed and active. TAASA Migration Camp relocates to the Ndutu region for this season.
The shoulder months of May and early June bring more afternoon rains, with lower visitor numbers, and lush landscapes. It is a quieter, more intimate time to be in the Serengeti, and rates are often more accessible. These months are a treasure trove of unique experiences, allowing for deeper connections with nature and the breathtaking beauty of this hidden wonderland.
TAASA Lodge, being a permanent lodge located within the Poleleti Game Reserve in the Northern Serengeti, is excellent year-round. The north is one of the most productive game-viewing areas on the continent regardless of season. For more information read our seasonality guide.
Absolutely! The Serengeti is a thriving ecosystem regardless of the migration’s location. The resident wildlife – including lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, and countless other species – remain within the park. In fact, some visitors prefer non-migration seasons for a more intimate safari experience with fewer vehicles. TAASA Lodge, with its location in the northern Serengeti, offers fantastic game viewing and unique activities like night drives even when the migration is elsewhere, ensuring a fulfilling safari at any time.

For peak seasons, like the Great Migration river crossings or calving season, or if you have specific dates in mind, we strongly recommend booking 9 to 12 months in advance. TAASA Lodge has twelve tented suites, and TAASA Migration Camp has twelve tented suites. We are deliberately intimate, which means we also fill up quickly. If you’ve identified dates that work for your family or group, do not wait. The best time to book is always earlier than feels necessary.
A game drive is an electrifying mix of anticipation, quiet observation, and sudden bursts of excitement. You’ll be in an open-sided 4×4 safari vehicle for optimal viewing and photography. The feeling is one of profound connection to nature. You’ll experience the vastness of the plains, the thrill of tracking animals, and the calls of distant birds. It’s often punctuated by moments of serene stillness, watching animals in their natural habitat, followed by the adrenaline rush of a predator sighting.
TAASA is a responsible safari operator that adheres to strict park rules, but you can expect surprisingly close encounters. It’s not uncommon to have elephants walk past your vehicle, lions resting just metres away, or giraffes browsing at eye level. Your guide and tracker will always prioritize your safety and the welfare of the animals. At TAASA Lodge, we have the ability to traverse off-road, which allows you to observe them even closer from a safe, respectful distance without disturbing their natural behavior.

While nature is unpredictable, the Serengeti is renowned for its incredible biodiversity. You are highly likely to see:
At TAASA Lodge and TAASA Migration Camp, our expert guides have an intimate knowledge of animal behavior and local territories, maximizing your chances of incredible sightings.
We ask our guests this question often, and certain themes come up consistently.
The scale surprises people. The Serengeti is 5,700 square miles (14,763 square kilometers) which is larger than many countries. No image or film adequately conveys the size of the horizon, or the way the sky occupies more of your visual field than the land below it.
The quiet surprises people, especially those coming from busy cities. The absence of traffic, notifications, and background noise creates a sensory recalibration that most guests find unexpected and deeply welcome.
The food surprises people. A common misconception is that safari camps offer rough, functional catering. TAASA Lodge and TAASA Migration Camp both take great pride in providing exceptional dining experiences. Meals are beautifully prepared, varied, and often served in extraordinary settings: under the stars, beside a fire, or on your private deck at your tent.
And finally, the emotional response surprises people. Many guests report feeling moved in ways they didn’t anticipate.
Expert guides like those at TAASA possess an unparalleled ability to “read” the bush. They notice:

Pack light, comfortable, and practical clothing in neutral colors (khaki, olive green, brown) to blend into the environment and avoid startling animals.
