The Serengeti is one of the few safari destinations in Africa that offers extraordinary wildlife viewing all year round. The landscape changes with the seasons, the famous Great Migration moves across the plains, and each month brings its own atmosphere, colors and wildlife encounters.
At TAASA Lodge and TAASA Migration Camp, the experience shifts beautifully with the rhythm of this iconic Tanzanian ecosystem. Whether you’re drawn to lush green landscapes, dramatic river crossings or quiet shoulder seasons, there is always something remarkable happening in the Serengeti.

This is the season that made the Serengeti legendary. The dry months from June through October bring the Great Migration to its most dramatic conclusion: the Mara River crossings.
Two million animals, wildebeest, zebra and Thomson’s gazelle converge on the northern Serengeti, and what follows is one of the most visceral wildlife spectacles on Earth. The herds gather in their tens of thousands on the river banks, pace and turn in mass indecision. Then launch themselves into the current in a roaring, churning flood of muscle and panic while Nile crocodiles wait below. It is frightening and beautiful simultaneously, and no description fully conveys the weight of it in person.
Beyond the crossings, the dry season offers the most reliably productive game viewing of the year. With vegetation sparse and water sources contracted, animals concentrate around rivers and remaining waterholes, making them far easier to locate and observe.
This is also the busiest period. Popular crossing points on the Mara River attract significant numbers of visitors. September remains excellent for crossings as the herds begin their return journey southwards.
From May through to October, TAASA Migration Camp relocates to Kogatende in the northern Serengeti with front-row positioning for the Mara River crossings. This is as close to the drama as it is possible to get, with the intimacy and exclusivity that only an intimate luxury camp can provide. This is the most in-demand period for TAASA Migration Camp. Early booking is strongly advised.
TAASA Lodge guides venture into the national park for game drives and to the Kenyan border for Mara river crossing drama, but the added advantage of a private northern concession means guests also have access to a vast, exclusive wilderness beyond the park boundaries.

December marks the beginning of the Serengeti’s green season, and with it one of the most remarkable wildlife events on the planet. The short rains have already begun to transform the southern plains, and the great wildebeest herds are moving southwards into the Ndutu region drawn by the flush of new grass that will sustain the most critical event in the migration cycle: calving season.
January and February may well be the most emotionally powerful months in the Serengeti calendar. The wildebeest herds have settled across the southern Serengeti and the Ndutu region, drawn there by the short rains that have transformed the plains into a vast sea of green grass. This is calving season and it is unlike anything else on the African continent. Around 500,000 wildebeest calves are born within a concentrated window of just a few weeks, flooding the savannah with wobbly-legged newborns and triggering a feeding frenzy among the resident predators.
The photography opportunities are exceptional. Light is soft and diffuse beneath partly cloudy skies, golden hour is long and luminous. Crowds are moderate compared to the peak river-crossing season, and the atmosphere is unhurried and intimate. By March into April, the mood begins to shift. The long rains gather on the horizon, humidity rises, and the herds begin to fracture and drift northwards.
From November through to the end of April, TAASA Migration Camp is set up in the Ndutu area of the southern Serengeti placing guests directly in the heart of calving season. With just 12 tents, the experience is intimate by design. Guests staying at TAASA Lodge during this season enjoy spectacular wildlife viewing across the surrounding conservation areas while the Serengeti itself bursts with life.

May and November sit on either side of the dry and green season, and both are among the most rewarding, and most underappreciated, months in the Serengeti calendar.
May arrives as the long rains begin to ease. The landscape is at its most lushly green, the air is clean and largely dust-free, and the migration herds are on the move northwards through the central Serengeti. Visitor numbers are low, roads are quiet, and resident wildlife is reliably present. The thinning vegetation as May progresses makes for great sightings. For the traveler who wants great game, beautiful conditions, and manageable crowds at pre-peak rates, May is a wonderful time to visit Tanzania.
November mirrors this quality on the other side of the green season. The short rains arrive, bringing relief to the dust-parched October landscape, and the savannah greens almost overnight. November also ushers in a surge of migratory birdlife, with hundreds of species arriving from the northern hemisphere, making this arguably the finest birding month in the Serengeti. Visitor numbers drop sharply from peak season, and the overall mood is one of quiet abundance.
TAASA Lodge is open year-round, and the long rainy season is when its private concession advantage is felt most keenly. While vehicle traffic in the public national park drops to almost nothing, TAASA’s guests still enjoy exclusive night game drives and off-road access. Privileges unavailable to lodges operating strictly within park boundaries. Lower rates make this one of the best-value luxury safari experiences.

Many guests choose to combine both properties, spending several nights at TAASA Lodge for its exclusive concession access and night drives, and joining TAASA Migration Camp for direct immersion in whichever chapter of the migration is unfolding at the time of travel. It’s the question we’re asked more than any other, and the truth is there is no single answer. The Serengeti rewards visitors in every season. The only question worth asking is which Serengeti experience speaks to you.
